NEWARK, N.J. - The Seton Hall tennis team wrapped up its fall season over the weekend as four Pirates combined to post 10 wins at the NJIT Invitational.
The doubles squad of Madison Shoemaker (Halfmoon Bay, British Columbia) and Julie Martiny (Brussels, Belgium) recorded three victories, capturing the consolation title in doubles flight 2. After falling 3-8 to Cheryl Kukkonen and Alba Sala of Albany in the first round, Shoemaker and Martiny bounced back to rattle off three-straight victories.
The Pirate pair took down Haley Dubits and Paige Olson of Sacred Heart, 8-5, in a battle of SHU's. In the consolation semifinal, Shoemaker and Martiny faced a stiffer test from the Fairleigh Dickinson duo of Mariya Krachok and Manuela Leme, but was able to emerge from the tiebreak with an 8-7 (3) victory.
Riding the momentum of their two wins, Shoemaker and Martiny easily put away Claire Minnoe and Kelly Mulquin (Saint Joseph's), 8-1, in the consolation final.
Shoemaker was also crowned the B flight singles consolation champion after she strung together consecutive victories to close the tournament. In her first consolation match, the Seton Hall junior ousted Mulquin in straight sets, 6-3, 6-4. Next, she drew a matchup with Natalia Melibeu of the host Highlanders and came away with an 8-5 decision. Marist's Nikki Rohan defaulted in the final, giving Shoemaker, who was one of four SHU players selected to play in last week's USTA/ITA Northeast Regional Championship, a consolation draw victory.
Martiny also scored a singles win, advancing to the quarterfinals of the D flight with s commanding 6-0, 6-1 performance against Stephanie Zeigler of Fairfield. In the quarters, Martiny and Albany's Cathryn Crummey combined for the tightest match of the tournament. Crummey claimed the first set, 6-3, but the freshman Martiny took the second, 6-2. In the decisive third, Crummey came away with the slight edge, winning 10-7.
Sophomores Alex Landert (Naples, Fla.) and Julia Keenan (Greenland, N.H.) were also in action in singles competition and each recorded main draw victories.
Landert advanced to the C flight semifinals, easing past Taylor Gurda (Sacred Heart), 6-2, 6-2 and Lucia Radovic of Saint Peter's, 6-1, 6-2. Keenan was the Pirates' lone representative in the top singles bracket and added a 6-3, 6-0 win over Sabrina Tahir of Marist to book a spot in the quarterfinals.
The respective efforts of the four Pirates who competed at NJIT concluded yet another successful fall for The Hall. A full recap of the fall season can be seen later this week on SHUPirates.com
