FARMINGDALE, N.Y. -Senior Hughnique Rolle (Nassau, Bahamas) turned in a momentous performance on Saturday morning, helping the Seton Hall women to a second place team finish by striding her way to a first place finish at the 2012 Hofstra Brick Stone Run.
The win was the first by a Seton Hall runner since cross country became an individual program. Rolle, who opened the year with a team-best time at the Monmouth XC Kick-Off last week, has now led the squad in the last four meets dating back to last season. Her time of 19:15.85 on the 5K course bested her nearest competitor by nearly 10 seconds.
The Pirates fell just a single point short of edging BIG EAST foe St. John’s and securing the team victory. The Red Storm won the meet with a score of 36, just ahead of a game SHU squad that finished with 37 points. The Seton Hall women's team secured its second consecutive 2nd plaace finish to start 2012 and its collective score was the lowest the team has posted in four years.
Sophomore Mary Migton (Ledgewood, N.J.) came across the line second for Seton Hall, and in third-place among Division I runners in a time of 19:41.91. Migton has proven to be a consistent force for the Pirates and has now posted one off the top-two times on the squad in each of her 11 career races.
Two more Pirates also finished in the top-10 among Division I competitors on the day as junior Nyala Eddings (Chicago, Ill.) placed seventh after finishing in 20:18.76 and freshman Amanda Quaglia (Exeter, Pa.) posted a time of 20:24.54 to end her day in ninth position.
Alex Ryan (Aurora, Colo.) completed the scoring for SHU, turning in a 17th place time of 21:27.67. With the results, both Quaglia and Ryan have now contributed a scoring time in each of their first two collegiate outings.
NJIT finished third and Hofstra came in fourth to round out the Division I leader board.
Also running 5,000 meters, the Seton Hall men also impressed on Saturday, riding the strength of five top-10 individual finishes to grab second place among competing Division I squads.
In what has become a familiar scene, senior co-captain Jared Hanko (Montville, N.J.) led the way for the men in blue and white, placing fourth with a final time of 16:35.40. By again setting the pace on the men’s side, Hanko extended his streak as the team’s top finisher to 11 consecutive meets.
Junior Carl Johnston (Surrey, British Columbia), the last man to lead SHU besides Hanko, posted a sixth place time of 16:36.18. The next runner across the line was sophomore Tyler Orner (Sinking Spring, Pa.), who clocked in at 17:01.92, placing seventh and capturing the first top-10 finish of his career.
Senior Cory Hellwig (Vernon, N.J.) and freshman Ryan Flannery (Forked River, N.J.) also finished back-to-back to complete an impressive effort for the Pirates on the day. Hellwig came across in 17:35.29 to finish ninth, just ahead of Flannery who completed the course in 17:36.84 to place 10th among Division I competitors in just his second career appearance.
Only an NJIT squad that boasted four of the top-five finishers surpassed the Hall’s team score of 36 points. The Highlanders, the 15th ranked team in the preseason USTFCCCA Mid-Atlantic regional poll, finished with 19 points.
Both squads will travel to Maryland next weekend, as they will hit the course at the UMES Cappy Anderson Invitational on Saturday, September 15 looking to continue their strong start to 2012.
