The Pirates got off to an outstanding start against the Explorers, scoring a mere 78 seconds into the matchup, their fastest goal to start a game this season.
Seton Hall's leading scorer Ashley Clarke (Paramus, N.J.) got the play started and recorded the first of her two assists on the day. She made the initial pass to junior Brittney Albrecht (Mahwah, N.J), who crossed a ball into senior Stephanie Soma (Franklin, Mass.) for a header to the right side to give The Hall an early 1-0 lead.
La Salle bounced back with two scores before the break, as Renee Washington scored on a shot to the left corner in the 22nd minute and Kelsey Haycock beat SHU goalkeeper Alyssa Kelly (Southampton, N.J.) in the 28th minute, with an assist from Washington.
Kelly made three saves in the first half and finished with a career-high 10 stops in the match, but the Pirates allowed four more goals in the second half as the Explorers pulled away.
Haycock scored twice more in the second period, with her two scores coming in over a span of fewer than five minutes. Her 51st minute goal was off a rebound after Kelly turned away her initial shot, while Erin Brennan and Maryam Huseini each had an assist on her third goal, which was a redirect off a cross in the 56th minute.
The Pirates' second score of the game came later in the half, as Clarke fed junior Marie Klemme (Berlin, Germany) for her team-leading third goal of the season.
Klemme, who entered the year without scoring a goal in her previous 36 appearances, has now scored three times over the first seven games in 2012.
Clarke leads the Pirates with nine points on two goals and five assists. She has nine assists in her career which is tied for the seventh-highest total in program history, and with five assists already this season she is tied for sixth in the single-season record book.
La Salle and Seton Hall were meeting for the first time since Aug. 29, 2003, when the teams played to a 1-1 tie. The Pirates now lead the all-time series with the Explorers, 6-3-2.
Seton Hall (5-2) will return to action on Sunday, Sept. 9, when it faces William & Mary on the second day of the Villanova Classic. William & Mary enters Sunday afternoon's contest with a 4-2 overall mark, picking up a 1-0 win over tournament host Villanova earlier on Friday.
