WASHINGTON, D.C. - Sophomore twins Shelbey and Stacey Manthorpe (Merion Station, Pa.) both recorded double-doubles as the Seton Hall women's volleyball team remained unbeaten in BIG EAST play with a 3-1 (25-17, 23-25, 25-22, 25-18) victory at Georgetown on Friday.
The win improves Seton Hall to an impressive 15-1, its best start in program history. Its 12-match win streak is its longest since 1994. Additionally, the road victory is the first for the Pirates in BIG EAST play and improves them to 3-0 in conference games.
Stacey Manthorpe tallied 10 kills and 12 digs for her team-leading 10th double-double of the season, while sister Shelbey notched 12 kills and a team-high 22 assists for double-double number nine.
Senior Morgan DeVries (Grand Rapids, Mich.) recorded a season-high 12 kills to go with a team-leading .407 hitting percentage.
Sophomore Ashani Rubin (Philadelphia, Pa.) had a breakout performance for the Pirates. The 6-foot-2 middle blocker tallied a career-high eight kills to go with an impressive .316 hitting percentage.
Libero Alyssa Warren (Joliet, Ill.) led all players on the defensive side with 23 digs.
Seton Hall dominated the opening set. After Georgetown grabbed an early 2-1 lead, the Pirates reeled off seven consecutive points to take an 8-2 advantage and never relinquished the lead. The Hoyas would creep to within three points at 18-15, but Seton Hall held them off and cruised to a 25-17 first set win.
The Pirates held an early 6-5 lead in set two, but Georgetown came storming back with an 8-1 run to take a 13-7 lead. Seton Hall would slowly chip away at the lead and Molly Grammer's (Center Valley, Pa.) kill cut the Hoya lead to one at 20-19, but this time it was Georgetown that came away with a hard fought 25-23 victory to tie the match at one set apiece.
Georgetown (6-10, 0-3) rode its set two momentum into set three and took an early 6-1 advantage, but the Pirates would rebound with six straight points to take a 7-6 lead. With the score tied at eight, Seton Hall scored four straight to take a 12-8 advantage. Although Georgetown would remain competitive, it never regained the lead and Seton Hall won set three, 25-22.
The Pirates dominated set four late. With Seton Hall leading 12-9, the Pirates went on an 8-1 run to take a commanding 20-10 lead. The Pirates cruised to a 25-18 fourth set victory. DeVries and Shelbey Manthorpe combined for 10 kills in the deciding set.
The Pirates will return to action on Sunday, September 30 when they remain on the road for a matinee match at Villanova. Match time is scheduled for 2:00 pm. Seton Hall will return home to Walsh Gym on Saturday, Oct. 13 when they host Marquette.
