SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - The Seton Hall University women's soccer team fell in its first of two weekend home matches, dropping a 4-0 decision to #21 Marquette University on Friday night.
With the loss, Seton Hall (6-5-0, 1-2-0) is now 0-2-1 all-time against Marquette.
The Pirates fell in an early hole as the Golden Eagles jumped out in front less than five minutes into the proceedings. MU forward Rachel Sloan found herself in space and worked around a sliding effort from Seton Hall keeper Gina Maiorana (Street, Md.), then sent a shot inside the far post to give Marquette a 1-0 lead on her third goal of the season.
SHU threatened to equalize three minutes later as they manufactured their first chance of the match. Junior Brittney Albrecht (Mahwah, N.J.) won the ball in midfield and played forward Katie Ritter (Hagerstown, Md.) in on goal down the left wing. Ritter carried the ball into a central position and made a pass to Marie Klemme (Berlin, Germany) at the edge of the area. Klemme controlled, and sent a pass back to Albrecht who had joined the play, but Albrecht's attempt sailed high.
In the 14th minute, Marquette senior Rachel Brown was a central figure in the sequence that resulted in an insurance goal for the visitors. Brown found herself open in the box and fired a shot that deflected out of play, earning a corner. On the ensuing set piece, Brown got on the end of a ball from teammate Megan Kelly and used a header to put it home to double the advantage.
The Pirates continued to create their own looks at goal though, and Albrecht again created an opportunity as SHU threatened to pull one back. The Mahwah native found herself on the ball in the attacking third and threaded an incisive pass through two MU defenders to find a rushing Ashley Clarke (Paramus, N.J.) in stride. Clarke was in behind the defense, but Marquette goalkeeper Amanda Engel came off her line to cut down the angle and make a sprawling save on a quality strike from Clarke.
The Golden Eagles would add another before the half, stretching the score line to 3-0 in their favor. The tally came in the 39th minute as MU maintained possession despite a superb effort from Maiorana to break up a one-on-one chance.
Seton Hall's freshman keeper came off her line and tackled the ball away from a player in space, but the ball deflected to another MU player. The Golden Eagles worked the ball to the right side where Brown found an opening and sent a cross into the box. The pass found MU junior Kate Reigle unmarked, and she guided it past Maiorana for her fourth score of the season.
With the half drawing to a close, the Pirates narrowly missed cutting into the deficit when a speculative effort from substitute Alexis Urbanski (Aberdeen, N.J.) struck woodwork and stayed out.
Maiorana was steady between the pipes for the Pirates in the second half, coming up with three saves as Marquette continued to apply pressure. With exactly 80 minutes gone however, MU junior Ashley Stemmeler added a fourth when she sent a long range shot into the bottom right corner for the final tally of the night.
For the game, Marquette (6-2-1, 2-0-0) outshot the Pirates, 18-to-8 in total attempts and held a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Seton Hall will look to bounce back on Sunday afternoon when they host another cross-divisional foe in the USF Bulls. Kick-off is scheduled for 1 p.m. from Owen T. Carroll Field.
