The men finished second for the third week in a row while the women posted a third place finish, their fourth top-three finish in as many meets this season. Hosts Embry Riddle took home both team titles.
Senior Jared Hanko (Montville, N.J.) once again led an impressive effort from the men's squad as all five of the team's scorers were among the top-20 times overall for the third consecutive outing. Hanko completed the 8K course in 27:37.69 to place fifth in the field of 113 runners, securing his third straight top-five finish.
Junior Carl Johnston (Surrey, British Columbia) came across next for SHU, recording a time of 28:34.20 to place 11th. Hanko and Johnston have now finished 1-2 for the men's squad in every meet this year.
Freshmen Jacob Bast (St. Louis, Mo.) and Ryan Flannery (Forked River, N.J.) crossed the line back-to-back as they each picked up their third scoring time in four collegiate appearances. Flannery clocked in at 28:51.13 to take 16th place with his classmate right on his heels. Bast finished hundredths of a second later, placing 17th in a time of 28:51.57.
Senior Cory Hellwig (Vernon, N.J.) put together a career-best 8K performance on the day, finishing in 19th position with an official time of 29:01.07, completing scoring for Seton Hall.
The Pirates finished with a collective score of 68, behind only an Embry Riddle squad that put up a score of 21.
Another senior, Hughnique Rolle (Nassau, Bahamas) led the way on the women's side. Rolle placed fifth individually among 108 competitors, navigating the 5K course in 19:47.08.
Both Rolle and Hanko have led their respective teams in all four meets this season. In fact, with their performances on Saturday Hanko built his streak as the team's top finisher to 13 straight appearances while Rolle has paced the women on six consecutive occasions.
Junior Nyala Eddings (Chicago, Ill.) continued her breakout season, finishing eighth to take home her second top-10 and fourth top-20 finish of 2012. Eddings registered a time 20:05.81 to rank second on the squad for the second straight week.
Coming across third for the women in blue and white was freshman Amanda Quaglia (Reading, Pa.). Quaglia has burst onto the scene and is now the only freshman on either the men's or women's team to contribute to the team score in all four meets this season. On Saturday, she recorded a time of 20:19.75 to take 12th place and her fourth straight top-20 finish.
Rounding out scoring for the SHU women was a pair of second-year competitors, sophomore Mary Migton (Ledgewood, N.J.) and junior Kristen May (Shrewsbury, Mass.). Migton kept her streak of scoring for the team in every meet she has competed in alive by finishing 34th with a time of 21:27.28. May came across less than a second later, posting a 35th place time of 21:28.34, contributing to the team score for the first time this season.
The effort from the Seton Hall women amounted to a cumulative score of 88, third-best in the 12-team field. Embry Riddle took the title with a team score of 47.
After a week off, both squads will return to action on Friday, October 5 when they go up against the area's best squads at the 2012 Metropolitan Championships. The meet will be held at Van Cortland Park in the Bronx, the same site as the 2012 BIG EAST Championships.
