Help Tennis Support Gilda's Club

SOUTH ORANGE, N.J. - Even as they gear up for the start of the fall season this weekend, the Seton Hall tennis team is set to take some time out in support of National Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month.
The entire squad will be on hand when the Pirates open their home volleyball schedule against Princeton this Wednesday, September 12th at 7:00 p.m. The team will once again be selling teal bracelets, the color designated for ovarian cancer awareness, and collecting donations in an effort to help promote awareness.
This marks the second consecutive year that the program has participated in this initiative. Last season, the team attended the women's soccer match against Syracuse and sold out of bracelets prior to halftime.
"As student-athletes, it is very important for us to be active in the community," said senior team captain Karina Cordero (Maracay Estado Aragua, Venezuela). "This is a great opportunity to help raise awareness for a worthy cause that most people would not hear about otherwise and we are excited to be involved again this year."
According to the American Cancer Society, approximately 22,280 new cases of ovarian cancer will be diagnosed in the United States in 2012, while an estimated 15,500 women will lose their battle with ovarian cancer over that same span.
"Supporting ovarian cancer research is a cause that hits close to home for our program," said head coach Greg Wyzykowski. "I was extremely pleased with what our team was able to do with this project last year. This being our second time around, I am hopeful that we will be able to raise even more this year."
Bracelets will be sold at 1 for $3 and 2 for $5. All proceeds and donations will go to Gilda's Club of South Jersey.
Founded in honor of comedian Gilda Radner who was diagnosed with ovarian cancer in 1986, Gilda's Club is a cancer support organization with a national presence.
Gilda's Club of South Jersey is a local affiliate of the Cancer Support Community. The non-profit organization offers support groups, workshops, lectures and social events to everyone touched by cancer, all free of charge. The organization pledges that 100% of every dollar raised goes directly towards supporting its members.
