WEST LONG BRANCH, N.J. - The gun sounded on a new season on Saturday afternoon as the Seton Hall men's and women's cross country programs opened their 2012 slate at the ninth-annual Monmouth Cross Country Kickoff.
The effort of the women's squad headlined the day as the Pirates finished the 4K course with a cumulative score of 66 to place second on the team leader board behind only Albany, the team's best collective finish in the last four years.
Senior Hughnique Rolle (Nassau, Bahamas) continued the impressive form she displayed while finishing the final two meets of 2011 as the top finisher for SHU, placing fifth overall (14:44.7) in the field of 88 female runners.
Close behind was sophomore Mary Migton (Ledgewood, N.J.) who turned in a 13th place performance with a time of 15:22.0. Rolle and Migton have now finished 1-2 for the SHU women's team in all seven meets they have competed in together.
Other strong performances included an impressive 16th place time (15:30.2) for freshman Amanda Quaglia (Reading, Pa.) in her collegiate debut. Nyala Eddings (Chicago, Ill.) started her junior campaign by adding a fourth top-20 finish for Seton Hall on the day, coming across in 18th position with a time of 15:33.8.
Another freshman, Alex Ryan (Aurora, Colo.), finished the day in 51st position overall. Ryan posted a time of 16:39.8 to round out the scoring for the women's side.
The Pirates' lead man in all nine meets in 2011, senior Jared Hanko (Montville, N.J.) again paced the Seton Hall men. Hanko emerged from the 6K course in 24th place in a field of 92 runners after registering a time of 20:29.4.
Junior Carl Johnston (Surrey, British Columbia) was the next Pirate to cross the line, coming in 30th place (20:44.1). Senior Cory Hellwig (Vernon, N.J.) produced a time of 20:54.0 that was good enough for 41st place while sophomore Tyler Orner (Sinking Spring, Pa.) ran a 21:17.5 to end his day in 55th position.
Completing the scoring for SHU was freshman Jacob Bast (St. Louis, Mo.) who completed his first race in blue and white in a time of 21:24.8 to place 60th.
The collective effort of the men's squad resulted in a team score of 159 points, placing Seton Hall sixth in the field of seven men's teams. NYU won the meet with a score of 37 points.
Both teams will be back in action next week when they travel to New York to tackle the course and battle the field at the Hofstra Brick Stone Run. The meet is scheduled to be held on Saturday, September 8 in Bethpage, N.Y.
