Webster Places 15th in 200-IM Semis

OMAHA, Neb. - Seton Hall University men's swimming alum Kevin Webster ('11) finished in 15th-place overall in the 200-meter individual medley semifinals at the 2012 U.S. Swimming Olympic Team Trials on Friday night at the CenturyLink Center in Omaha, Neb.
Webster swam in the first heat of two semifinals heats, which was broadcast live on NBC, as he shared the pool with Olympians Michael Phelps and Ryan Lochte.
Webster finished eighth in his heat with a personal record time of 2:02.42, shaving 0.63 seconds off his preliminary time from earlier in the day and a full 1:38 off his U.S. Olympic Trial qualifying mark of 2:03.80.
Lochte won the heat and is seeded first overall in the 200-IM heading into Saturday night's final, posting a time of 1:55.51. Tyler Harris grabbed the eighth and final position for the final with a mark of 2:01.51, a mere 0.91 faster than Webster's semifinal race.
Webster finished 16th in Friday afternoon's preliminary trials, posting a then personal-record time of 2:03.05.
Coming into the qualifying swim on Friday Webster was ranked 35th on the official psych sheet with a qualifying time of 2:03.80. A total of 118 athletes competed in the preliminaries for a shot to advance to the semifinal races.
Webster is just the second student-athlete in program history to compete at the U.S. Olympic Team Trials, and the first to do so since Peter Economou in 2000. He also swam in the 400-meter freestyle and 400-meter individual medley preliminaries on Monday, placing 25th in the 400-individual medley rankings.
Webster was named the 2011 BIG EAST Championship Most Outstanding Swimmer and won the conference championship in the 400-yard individual medley and the 200-yard backstroke, qualifying to compete at the 2011 NCAA Championships in the 400-IM, 200-backstroke and 500-freestyle. He also won the 2010 BIG EAST Championship in the 200-yard backstroke.
