WEST POINT, N.Y. - The Seton Hall tennis team continued play on day two of the East Coast Invitational, hosted by Army, on Saturday. The Pirates are out of contention for any main-draw championships at the event, but still picked up some singles victories on the day.
Junior Courtney Kilarski (Roseville, Calif.) upset the "D" bracket's #1 seed, Egzona Morina from FDU, in the quarterfinals in a tough three-set match (6-4, 0-6, 11-9). She then fell in the semifinals (6-2, 6-0) to #4 seed Jessica Podlofsky from UMass. Kilarski will play for third place on Sunday.
Junior Elizabeth Verow (Barnt Green, England) dropped a 6-2, 6-1, decision to West Virginia's Veronica Cardenas in the quarterfinal of the "C" draw. She will take on Army's Jamila Paul in a consolation semifinal match tomorrow.
In the "A" consolation rounds, freshman Pui Wing Sher (Shui Way, Hong Kong) beat Elizabeth Harrington from Sacred Heart, 9-8 (7-0), and Kellen Albertson from Bowdoin, 8-1, to advance to the final where she will take on Joanna Zwirbulis from St. John's.
Sophomore Karina Cordero (Maracy Estado Aragua, Venezuela) won her first match of the day in the consolation round to Krysten Chen from St. Peter's, 8-1. She then dropped a match to Lucy Bird from Bryant, 8-6. Tomorrow morning she will play in a 1-on-1 doubles tournament. This is a new format where the server must serve & volley or lose the point. All points are played out cross court only and doubles alleys are in. If you hit the ball down the line it is out.
Competition wraps up at the East Coast Invitational tomorrow.
