Tennis Begins Quinnipiac Tournament with Doubles Matches

HAMDEN, C.T. Seton Hall’s women’s tennis team started off the first day of the Quinnipiac University Tournament with doubles victories and much improvement from last week’s invitational.
Starting off the Quinnipiac Tournament was Seton Hall’s pair of junior Denise Liebschner (Weinboehla, Germany) and freshman Elizabeth Verow (Birmingham, England). Liebschner and Verow competed in the first round of “A” doubles against Army’s team of Shurtz/Warford. The girls defeated Army 8-4 moving them on to the next round to face Mungo/Hamilton from University of Maryland Baltimore County. Liebschner and Verow defeated UMBC as well; 8-5. This puts Seton Hall in the semifinals which will be played in the remaining days of the tournament.
Also competing in the flight “A” doubles round was freshman duo Michelle Weerasinghe (Edina, M.N.) and Courtney Kilarski (Roseville, C.A.).Seton Hall lost to the twin team of Leikem/Leikem from the University of Rhode Island; 8-2. In the consolation round Weerasinghe/Kilarski moved on to defeat Voloshin/Amberg of FairfieldUniversity; 8-6.
In the “B” flight of doubles, Seton Hall senior Danielle Viola (Niagara, N.Y.) and sophomore Belfin Sunbul (Izmir, Turkey) defeated Fairfield University’s pair of Luiz/Savoy; 8-0. However, Seton Hall lost in the next round to Couto/Jackman from UMBC; 8-3.
Also in the “B” flight was junior Alexandra Harvey (Chatham, N.J.) and sophomore Slavina Kaplanska (Sofia, Bulgaria). Harvey and Kaplonska lost in the first round to the mixed pair of Jennifer Marotta of UConn and Ali Warshavsky of Quinnipiac; 8-6. Seton Hall also lost in the next round to UMBC’s pair; 8-1.
The teams that are participating along with Seton Hall in the Quinnipiac Tournament are Army, UConn, University of Maryland Baltimore County, Bryant, FairfieldUniversity, Quinnipiac and the University of Rhode Island. All doubles matches and consolation games were eight game pro sets. Singles matches will start on Saturday September 20th at 9 am.
