MORGANTOWN, W. Va. The Seton Hall tennis had two players retire their singles matches and was defeated by West Virginia, 4-3. Despite the injuries the Pirates (1-5, 1-4) were almost able to pull the match out.
No. 1 singles player Denise Liebschner (Weinboehla, Germany) suffered a back injury. Junior Danielle Viola (Niagara Falls, N.Y.) tried to compete after getting hurt in SHU’s match against St. John’s earlier in the week, but continued to feel discomfort and was forced to retire the match.
Senior Nadezhda Shein (Tallinn, Estonia) coasted to a 6-1, 6-0 win over Monica Lyskawa. In No. 4 singles, senior Amanda El-Tobgy (Pittsburgh, Pa.) won in three sets over Colleen Speaker (6-4, 3-6, 6-2), and Belfin Sunbul (Izmir, Turkey) was victorious in straight sets over Ashley Pilsbury (6-3, 6-2)
Freshman Slavina Kaplonska (Sofia, Bulgaria) played a competitive match against Stephanie LaFortune. After losing the first set, Kaplonska rallied to win the second in a tie-break, but ultimately fell in the third, 6-1.
Prior to Liebschner’s injury in her singles match, she paired with Shein to win No. 1 doubles, 8-6. However, the Pirates lost in No. 2 and No. 3 action to give the Mountaineers the extra point for the win.
Seton Hall will face Cincinnati on Saturday, March 15 at 2:00 p.m. in Morgantown, W. Va.
