Hamden, Conn. The tennis team finished play at the Quinnipiac Fall Tournament on Sunday with strong performances in both singles and doubles competition. The Pirates won a total of 16 matches over the course of the three-day event, including a Flight C singles and a Flight B doubles championship.
Senior Iva Gyurgina (Radomir, Bulgaria) the No. 1 seed in the Flight C singles bracket won her event, ultimately defeating the University of Connecticut’s Liz Dibbs in two sets, 6-2, 6-2. To get to that point, Gyurgina defeated Joanne Encarnacion of Fairleigh Dickinson (6-0, 6-0), Adrianna Fonseca of UMBC (6-3, 6-7, [0-4], 10-8) and Shawna Sarson of Quinnipiac (6-0, 6-0) earlier in the weekend.
In doubles play, the pair of senior Ebru Burduroglu (Istanbul, Turkey) and junior Nadja Sein (Tallinn, Estonia) took home the Flight B championship. They defeated Monica Myers and Victoria Vasile of Stonybrook, 8-0, in the final match. Prior, they defeated Stonybrook’s Shaina Murugan and Caitlin Crowley (8-0), Army’s Bridie Burke and Kristin Beehler (8-6) and the University of Connecticut’s Alison Koch and Ashley Petruzzi (8-0).
Sein also competed in the Flight A singles bracket, where she advanced to the semifinal round after defeating the University of Connecticut’s Christine Burek, 6-2, 6-2, and Stonybrook’s Sandy Wijeratne, 6-1, 6-1. Sein then dropped the semifinal match to the No. 2 seed, Quinnipiac’s Gabby Pasternak, 7-5, 6-0.
Junior Amanda El-Tobgy (Pittsburgh, Pa.) played another strong tournament for the Pirates. She competed for the Flight B singles championship, where she fell to Tania Varela of Bucknell, 6-3, 7-6, (0-1). Previously in the tournament, El-Tobgy defeated Carlin Calcaterra of Bucknell (6-1, 6-0), BreAnn Cheung of the University of Connecticut (6-1, 6-4) and Amanda Petruzzi of Quinnipiac (6-0, 6-7, [0-3], 10-5) to qualify for the final.
In Flight A doubles play for the Pirates, Gyurgina and El-Tobgy advanced to the semifinal round of their bracket before falling to Ashley Globerman and Tania Varela of Bucknell, 8-4. Earlier in the weekend, Gyurgina and El-Tobgy defeated Sandy Wijertane and Erica Federgreen of Stonybrook, 8-3, and Christine Burek and Kelley LoRusso of the University of Connecticut, 8-2. Globerman and Varela went on to win the bracket championship by defeating Alice Chen and Pascaline Cette of UMBC, 8-1.
Other bracket winners include Julia Korsunova of Fairleigh Dickinson the No. 1 seed in the Flight A singles bracket who defeated Quinnipiac’s Gabby Pasternak, 6-3, 7-5, for the Flight A title.
The Pirates next play at home against NJIT on Friday, Oct. 6, at 1:00 p.m.
